Wednesday, January 15, 2003: Singing test

The singing exam was today. I don't know how it went; I did a few things wrong, and I have no idea how they grade, and whether the things I did wrong are mortal sins or merely venial ones.

This is what I did wrong:

  • I was phlegmy in one of the vocalises. I'm never sure what to do when I'm phlegmy; I just kept singing and I ended up mangling a couple of vowels and not quite hitting a few notes.
  • I sung a passage of one of my pieces wrong; I hit the wrong note at the beginning of the phrase and continued to be wrong for about three bars. I corrected myself for the rest of the song.
  • I screwed up the ear training part. I was given the choice of either singing or clapping the rhythm of a piece the adjudicator played. I hadn't realized singing was an option so I hadn't practiced it, but I thought it would be easier so I opted to sing in the exam, but I got it wrong. I might have got it wrong even if I clapped; it was never my strong point.
  • I screwed up the sight singing part. This is ridiculous; I'm a good sight-singer. But there was a do-la interval that I kept screwing up. I should do okay on this part if they give pity points for getting it right on the third try, with help.

Other than that (!) I think I did okay. As I said, I have no idea how the Conservatory marks. I could get a "disastrous, don't ever come back", or I could get a "not too bad, keep trying". I just don't know. I was sad about it for a while, but I think I'm okay now.

I took the whole day off work for the exam, which was a good idea. It gave me a chance to warm up and practice, and after the test was over I went to Indigo and treated myself to a couple of new books, a mochaccino and a slab of cake. How civilized.

And now it's over, and I can move on to other things. Not that all the extensive practicing I've been doing has been occupying all my time (the Buffy Seasons 1 through 3 DVDs have been occupying all my time) but mentally, I don't like to focus on too many things at once.

The Next Thing is the kitchen reno, so this weekend we're going to pick out our new kitchen cabinet doors, tiles, and maybe faucet. There will be a lot of transit involved since all the places that sell tiles and faucets are out in the boonies, but a fair number of them are clustered in the same area, so it won't be too onerous. It might even be fun!

Last year, I thought about how to interact with children, and I rediscovered science and truth.
