Friday, January 31, 2003: More hair, more kitchen
Last weekend I got the haircut I promised myself. I went to a place called Cooper Maxwell -- I chose it because I liked the pictures in their window. I picked a haircut out of one of the books of haircuts, and the guy washed my hair and cut it, and it was done. (In less than half an hour!) It's about two inches long and very sassy; exactly what I wanted, indeed. It can also be styled in about 45 seconds with the use of a small amount of goo and no (0) electrical appliances.
I've been styling it with a bit more goo, so it's spikier than it looks in that picture. Today I've got the bangs brushed to the side rather than over the forehead, which looks pretty good. Also this weekend we went to Home Depot to scope out prices for kitchen reno stuff. We wanted to look at their tiles, lighting, and bifold doors for the reno, and also closet organizers for general interest. They have white subway tiles, for about $3 per square foot, but they're very plain. Last weekend we found some at Taps for $5.75/sq. ft. with bevelled edges, and they look so swank. We'll only need about 20 square foot, so the difference between the two, pricewise, doesn't justify going for the boring tiles when the more expensive ones will make such an impact. We picked out a couple of neat light fixtures for less than $100. We need something to go over the sink (we're leaving the overhead as is). The most practical and interesting option is a fixture with three halogens on a rod, rather like this one, but with a straight horizonal rod. That provides lots of light options with very simple electrics. We need to replace the bifold door on the laundry room because the one we have now is very traditional in style and won't go with our new, modern kitchen. Our designer suggested we have the cabinet guy make a plain door and then we can paint it with blackboard paint to replace the blackboards we have on our cabinet doors now. The only problem with that plan is that the cabinet guy proposes to make the door in solid maple, to the tune of $450. It seems a bit much for something that will be painted, especially when you consider that primed bifold doors are available at Home Depot for $45. We also unexpectedly found a great rug for the living room. It's huge, almost 11" by 8", and absurdly soft. It's tan in colour, with lots of little squares in various earth colours. It's only $595, which is about what they were asking for smaller rugs at The Bay. We didn't buy it, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the one we end up having.
This weekend is TorontoConII; mayaroo and Stacey and KarenD and Iko are coming up for dinner at the Bow and to buy Lush stuff and shoes at Fluevog. It should be pretty cool; like chat, but with bodies! In addition to TorontoCon, we're having people over to watch Buffy tonight ("The Wish" and "Doppelgangland"), and next Thursday I'm going to the opera with friends. It's like I have a life or something! I think I might recaulk the tub, too. Oh! I almost forgot, I got 90% on the Grade 1 Rudiments music exam. That's not a great accomplishment, but I'm still pleased.
Last year, I didn't have
much to say, but it was warm!
