Thursday, December 18, 2003: Busy day
I was going to take it easy today because I had that cold which I still have. So I went to the post office to pick up a package and mail a card, went to the vet to get food for Mimi, on the way home got some chicken soup at Pasta Guy and some kleenex. Then I called my parents, made a loaf of bread, ran a load of diapers and made chicken broth. Then this evening I baked a dozen muffins. I'm not sure what came over me. I also read two magazines and drank five cups of tea. Delphine was in a lovely mood, which probably accounts for that impression I got that there were three or four extra hours today. Well, she was in a good mood this morning and afternoon, but in the early evening she was pretty cranky; I think her top teeth are bothering her. I gave her an all-organic, wheat-free maple-flavoured teething biscuit and that kept her happy for a while. This afternoon my father-in-law stopped by to visit Delphine (no-one visits me), and he came bearing the traditional Christmas gift of meat; sausage, burgers, chops and stewing beef from Cumbrae's. Cumbrae's is a really excellent butcher downtown; they get all their meat from happy animals, or so their marketing claims. It's tasty, anyway. The other day I was visiting my mother-in-law at the store where she works, and one of the owners of Cumbrae's came in and bought some Emile Henri. When my mother-in-law and I found out who he was we were all over him like groupies, telling him how much we love the store. It was a little odd. I told him he has to open a store uptown -- we actually never go to Cumbrae's because it's out of our way.
It's a week until Christmas, a fact which I am undoubtedly not the first to notice. I still need to get a few things, mainly food; a Terry's Chocolate Orange, a Toblerone, and all the stuff for Christmas dinner, which I will not list here. I can get that stuff early next week, though, so it's all fresh. That's gonna be some expensive grocery shopping.
Delphine is really strong and quite physically advanced; she's pulling herself to a stand, and standing for ten minutes or more, and almost cruising, all of which are maybe a month or two early. But she hasn't started babbling yet; babies around her age are usually doing a "ba ba da da ba" kind of thing, which she hasn't started at all. Girls are supposed to be more advanced verbally; maybe she'll be a tomboy. Anyway, I'm officially not worrying yet; I'm sure she'll figure it out all in a rush and catch up someday soon. In 2001 I was sad, and then I was happy. |
